Effective Sinusitis Herbal Remedies

Are you a long time sinus sufferer who just can’t seem to find relief with the over the counter or prescribed medications? You aren’t alone. Many of the more than 30 million Americans suffering from sinusitis are not getting their needed relief either. The long standing standard of antibiotics as treatment is now being reviewed as new studies have shown that most cases are not actually solved by these. On the other hand, sinusitis herbal remedies have begun to gain ground and have even caught the attention of physicians. However, not all of them are as effective as they claim to be. That’s what we’re here to help you with: finding effective sinusitis herbal remedies.

What you want to look for are herbs that have natural abilities to drain mucus. Most of the time, the sinus condition you have is due to trapped mucus. This can be caused by allergies, viral infections, fungal infections, and, of course, bacterial infections. The standard response of your body to these contaminants is to produce mucus; lots of it to trap whatever it is that is attacking your body. However, in cases of sinusitis, your nasal passages may become swollen, preventing the mucosal secretions from draining. If the contaminant is not removed, at some point, the body starts to produce too much mucus.

This is where your herbs come in. The body is already trying to get rid of the allergen (the material that causes the allergy) or the infection; all you have to do is to use an herb to help the process out. By clearing out the excess mucosal secretions, the body can get rid of whatever is causing your problem naturally. Two herbs you can start with are pepper and horseradish.

Pepper can be used as a natural decongestant. If you have eaten spicy foods before, you already know what I mean. The pepper almost works immediately, helping your body open up the sinuses and drain the mucus better. If you get too liberal with your pepper and get into trouble, drink some full cream milk to cancel the effects. You can retry after the pain subsides.

Horseradish is an herb that induces a warming effect in your body. This will help increase your blood flow. The more blood that reaches the allergy-affected or infected areas of your body, the more immune cells can help with the problem. This warming effect also has a particular effect on mucus, making it thinner and more liquid, allowing it to flow out of the body better.

It has the added bonus of having the ability to stimulate your lymphatic cells which also helps the inflammation you get from sinusitis. However, horseradish isn’t the easiest food to take. It has an odd and even unpleasant odor and taste that may take some getting used to.

You can also try herbs that have positive effects on your body’s immune system. Astragalus is a good example. Around 200mg twice a day is said to stimulate the production of immune cells in your body. An increase in the number of immune cells is always a good thing when you’re suffering from an infection. It also has similar thinning effects like that of the horseradish and ginger. Again, it is best to consult your doctor before trying any of these alternative solutions. Some actually promote the use of natural herbs so you can get more help from them.

The Most Effective Home Sinusitis Remedies Out There

The Most Effective Home Sinusitis Remedies Out There

Almost daily I am bombarded by questions from patients concerning the newest sinusitis remedies that promise to be the best and quickest fix for sinus problems. The majority of these are poorly researched and thus rarely give any symptomatic relief. But there are a few time tested sinusitis remedies that bring true relief. So here’s a list of ones I’ve found to actually work with patients

Food Allergy Cross Reactions

Very often people who suffer from seasonal allergies also suffer from food reactions. Most attention of allergies in sinusitis is focused on reducing seasonal pollen exposure or other environmental exposure, but many foods have the same property or are similar in structure to pollen that it causes the same reaction. We call this cross reaction. Here is a list of common seasonal allergies that foods often cross react with

If you are allergic to berch pollen the foods that can cross react include apples, celery, hazelnuts, peaches, pears and raw potatoes.

If you are allergic to ragweed pollen the foods that can cross react include bananas and melons.

If you are allergic to grasses the foods that can cross react include kiwi and tomatoes

If you are allergic to mugwort pollen the foods that can cross react include apples, carrots, kiwi, peanuts, parsley, coriander, fennel seeds and caraway seeds.

Consider avoiding the foods that can cross react to your allergen for a few weeks. A basic search on the internet can also help you find foods that can cross react to other seasonal pollens.

Red Hot Chili Peppers

Fan of spicy foods? Then this is the right remedy for you. Capsaician from red hot chili peppers has great medicinal properties for your sinuses. This little molecule helps break up mucus congestion and dilates the sinuses to help promote appropriate drainage. Try using recipes that call for red hot chili peppers on a regular basis and you’ll quickly notice sinus relief after these meals. These peppers are actually very easy to grow and I have a few friends who grow them indoors throughout the whole year.

Ginger

For those of you who can’t seem to stomach red hot chili peppers, this one is for you. Its medicinal properties mirror chili peppers as it helps reduce mucus buildup and facilitates proper mucus drainage. I prefer using this in a tea, drinking it 2-3 times a day. Be prepared to experience a slight sweat after drinking this tea. Also for those of you who have sinusitis dizziness, this herb will clear that up quickly.

Dietary changes

By far this tends to be the most effective method – albeit it is also the most life altering. Many patients are either afraid or not quite convinced that certain foods they ingest can actually be the culprit behind their sinusitis. What it really comes down to is not an allergy reaction but a response to the innate properties of certain foods that cause excessive mucus secretion. As we all know excessive mucus in the majority of causes is the causative agent of sinusitis. So what are these foods? The number one food I have found with patients contributing to their sinusitis is milk. Yes, despite the slogan of “It does your body good” it also happens to be the worst food every for sinus infections. The next time you drink a glass of milk, pay attention to your body for the next 30 minutes. Most likely you’ll have to clear your throat or spit out thick saliva. That’s because milk thickens your natural secretions within minutes. Another mucus secretion food – soy.  I usually put my patients on a rice, almond or potato milk substitute for a month when I believe milk is an issue. Sound hard, come on, anyone can do a month without dairy. Not only will your sinuses clear up but often I hear patients telling me they have lost weight or just seem to have more energy.

Vitamin C

One of the best sinusitis remedies on the market. Its antioxidant properties are already known but it also has been shown in research to inhibit mast cell degranualtion. Mast cells secrete histamine that is a major mediator of mucus congestion and other sinusitis symptoms. The problem with Vitamin C though is that most people don’t take enough. Linus Pauling, the Nobel Prize winner for Vitamin C suggested taking large dosages to get this effect, in the 3-5 gram range whereas most people take milligram doses (1000mg is one gram). I typically stick to Linus Pauling’s recommendations by taking 2-4 grams daily. Vitamin C is extremely safe and your body will tell you if it’s getting to much by causing slight diarrhea. If you do experience diarrhea, back off the vitamin C slightly until it stops and that is your dosage to take.

Effective Remedies To Cure Sinusitis

Effective Remedies To Cure Sinusitis

Severe eye pain and headaches caused by an inflamed sinus has patients looking for sinusitis remedies to bring them relief. A bacterial sinus infection requires a broad-spectrum antibiotic in order to destroy the bacteria that cause acute sinusitis. Due to congestion of the nasal passage, the use of decongestants is recommended in addition to antihistamines if an allergy exists. However, a decongestant must be used only with a true sinus headache otherwise, it could exacerbate the condition and make the headache even worse.

Whatever form of treatment you may wish to pursue, it is always advisable to consult your doctor prior to taking any medications. It is most likely that your doctor will refer you to an ENT or ear, nose, and throat specialist to find out the underlying cause of your sinusitis.

Other types of sinusitis remedies include pain relievers, nasal drops, and corticosteroids that are prescribed in order to decrease the inflammation. However, these are required only for chronic case of sinusitis.

Most sinusitis problems take about two to three weeks to clear while chronic cases may take several months to subside. When symptoms do not subside in some cases physicians may recommend functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS), a common operation to relieve patients from pain associated with sinusitis. The surgery is performed under general or local anesthesia. An endoscope, a thin tube with a lens, is introduced into the nose while the surgeon removes any growths known as nasal polyps that cause blockages. Alternatively, a tiny balloon is inflated in the nose, which opens up the passages. This procedure is called balloon catheter dilation.

Several natural sinusitis remedies can be administered at home. To begin with, keeping the body well hydrated by drinking plenty of water can help thin the mucus that accumulates in the sinus. Steam inhalation is also an effective remedy that can clear a clogged nose by adding herbal extracts like eucalyptus oil or menthol to steaming hot water.

Among the popular sinusitis remedies is Vitamin C which has antioxidant properties as well as the capacity to inhibit the formation of mucus in the sinus region. A daily dose of 2-4 grams is recommended in order to be effective. Apples, pears, bananas, melons, kiwi, tomatoes, carrots ought to be included in a diet in order to alleviate the symptoms of sinusitis.

Capsicum also has great medicinal properties and helps to break up mucus congestion. It also dilates the sinuses, enabling better drainage of the mucus. Ginger is also a effective remedy and can be added to a cup of tea to help clear the mucus buildup in the sinus regions.

Several sinusitis remedies can actually be grown in your backyard. Some herbal remedies are available over the counter and do not cost a fortune. Cat’s Claw or Uncaria Guianensis is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and help boost the immune system. The photochemicals present in the plant helps fight against infections. Astralagus is another herb that contains calcium, potassium, manganese, and zinc that are essential to help the body fight against infections. Echinacea is also among the most effective natural sinusitis remedies with antiviral properties that defend the body against sinus infections. This herb is available in as capsules and can be taken with lemon or honey.

While natural remedies may seem one of the most effective ways to get rid of sinus problems, it is always advisable to consult your physician prior to commencing any course of treatment.
